Vivo offers a range of swimming certifications, including lifeguard training, swim instructor courses, and first aid certification. These programs provide comprehensive training and hands-on experience to develop essential water safety, leadership skills, and job-applicable knowledge.

The Lifesaving Society Programs provide enriched training for those who are ready to go beyond learn-to-swim. These programs develop your judgement, knowledge, skills and fitness, building the foundation to prepare you to be a certified lifeguard.

This course challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgement, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. Successful candidates completing all requirements will receive a certification valid for two (2) years.
This course runs on Friday (6pm – 9pm), Saturday (9am – 4pm) and Sunday (9am – 4pm). In the spring, this course runs over Spring Break Monday (9am – 4pm), Tuesday (9am – 4pm) and Wednesday (9am – 12pm).
Prerequisites: Candidates must be 13 years or older OR have completed Bronze Star, AND have taken a CPR-C course. Proof of this certification is required to participate in this course.
Candidates start the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepare for responsibilities as an assistant lifeguard. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs. Successful candidates completing all requirements will receive a certification valid for two (2) years.
This course runs on Friday (5pm – 9pm), Saturday (9am – 5pm) and Sunday (9am – 5pm). In the Spring, this course runs over Spring Break Thursday – Saturday (9am – 5pm).
Prerequisites: Candidates must be 13 years or older AND have taken a Bronze Medallion AND Intermediate First Aid, AND CPR courses. Proof of these certifications is required to participate in this course.
The primary role of the National Lifeguard is the prevention of emergency situations and the timely and effective resolution of emergencies. Lifeguards prepare to fulfill this role as professional facilitators of safe, enjoyable aquatics. The National Lifeguard program develops the basic lifeguarding skills, principles, and decision-making process to help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aquatic facilities and emergencies. Successful candidates completing all requirements will receive a certification valid for two (2) years.
This course runs over two weekends on Fridays (5pm – 9pm), Saturdays (8am – 5pm) and Sundays (8am – 5pm). In the spring, this course runs over spring break Monday – Friday (8am – 5pm).
Prerequisites: Candidates must be 15 years or older AND completed Bronze Cross, Intermediate First Aid, AND CPR courses. Proof of these certifications is required to participate in this course.
Successful candidates completing all requirements will receive a certification valid for two (2) years.
Prerequisites: Candidates must have taken an Intermediate First Aid, CPR, AND National Lifeguard course within the past two (2) years. Proof of certification is required to participate in this course.
Lifesaving Society Instructors will learn to teach and evaluate swimmers participating in Lifesaving Society Swimming and Lifesaving programs. Teaching swimmers to make safe choices in, on and around the water and ice, learn to swim for fitness, and to enjoy other aquatic activities and sports.

Swim Instructors learn how to teach and evaluate candidates participating in the Swim for Life and Canadian Swim Patrol programs. The Swim Instructor course prepares instructors to apply Level 1 Leadership competencies and strategies designed to teach swimming and lifesaving. Successful candidates completing all requirements will receive a certification valid for two (2) years.
Prerequisites: Candidates must be 15 years or older AND have completed Bronze Cross. Proof of certification is required to participate in this course.
Note: This course is being offered as a Combo Course in Vivo’s 2026 Spring Summer Programs.
Instructors will learn how to teach and evaluate candidates participating in the SwimAbilities® program. The SwimAbilities® Instructor course prepares instructors to apply level 2 leadership competencies and strategies designed to teach children who require additional support. Successful candidates completing all requirements will receive a certification valid for two (2) years.
Prerequisites: Candidates must be 15 years or older AND have completed a Swim or Lifesaving Instructor Certification course. Proof of certification is required to participate in this course.
Note: This course is being offered as a Combo Course in Vivo’s 2026 Spring Summer Programs.
Swim Instructor® & SwimAbilities® Instructor – Combo Course (44 Hours). This combined course prepares instructors to teach and evaluate candidates in both the Swim for Life® and Canadian Swim Patrol programs, as well as the SwimAbilities® program for children who require additional supports. Participants will develop and apply Level 1 and Level 2 leadership competencies and instructional strategies designed to teach swimming, lifesaving, and adaptive aquatic skills.

Successful candidates completing all requirements will receive two certifications, each valid for two (2) years: Swim Instructor® and SwimAbilities® Instructor
Prerequisites: 15 years or older AND have passed Bronze Cross. Proof of certification is required.
Lifesaving Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Medals, Distinction, Boat Rescue and Lifesaving Society CPR programs. The Lifesaving Instructor course prepares Instructors to apply level 1 leadership competencies and strategies while teaching and evaluating. Lifesaving Instructor certification is the prerequisite for other Lifesaving Society instructor certifications. Certification in Alberta and Northwest Territories includes CPR Instructor certification.
Prerequisites: 15 years of age AND passed Bronze Cross or higher.
Keep your certifications valid with this recertification course. Successful candidates completing all requirements will receive a certification valid for two (2) years.
Prerequisites: Participants must have taken a Swim Instructor or Lifesaving Instructor course within the past two (2) years. Proof of this certification is required to participate in this course.
First aid is a valuable life skill that saves lives by providing you with the skills and judgement to respond to a variety of first aid emergencies. Research has shown that individuals with first aid training are less likely to become injured.

This Intermediate First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification course is an Approved Alberta Government workplace first aid course. Successful candidates completing all requirements will receive a certification valid for three (3) years.
Prerequisites: Ages 12+.
This Intermediate First Aid, CPR and AED Recertification course is an Approved Alberta Government workplace first aid course. Successful candidates completing all requirements will receive a certification valid for three (3) years.
Prerequisites: Candidates must have completed an Intermediate or Standard First Aid course within the past three (3) years. Proof of this certification is required to participate in this course.

Collectable ribbons for swim levels can still be requested from our Aquatics Team if your swimmer has passed their level.
