Meet Winter!

Posted: June 4, 2025

Winter is an absolute champion. Over the last few months Winter has become a regular at Vivo, specifically in the Indoor Park. She has clocked over 32,000 steps already – thanks to her enthusiasm and a little help from the Trexo robotic walker.

Winter is a happy, outgoing, seven-year-old girl.

“Winter wants to experience life, she is always excited to go places”, her mother Brandi shares.

Over the past three months Winter has been part of a research project with the University of Calgary and the Alberta Children’s Hospital using the Trexo robotic walker at Vivo. The Trexo gives children like Winter an opportunity to not only see the world, but to experience it in an upright position too – something that Winter has been very excited to do. Being immersed in an environment without the barrier of a wheelchair was a gamechanger for Winter, who loves interacting with and being around other children.

“Being in the Indoor Park with Winter and the Trexo was an opportunity for people to have conversations with us. With the wheelchair it can feel awkward or maybe people are worried to cross a line – at Vivo kids would come and say hi to Winter or ask questions – it was amazing”, Brandi commented on their recent experience at Vivo.

“Winter loved it when it was time for an exercise class! She loves the music and when Mesay was working he would always make sure the music was on for her”

The Trexo robotic walker gives Winter the opportunity to interact with her environment while also offering multiple benefits such as increased postural control, better sleep, and a boost to Winter’s mood.

“Winter opened up, she blossomed”, recalls Brandi of their time using the Trexo.

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day. While this is not digital, we are just as excited to share how technology like the Trexo robotic walker is advancing accessibility. At Vivo, accessibility has long been at the top of our priorities. We are excited to have been a small part in Winter’s incredible journey.

From welcoming environments to truly accessible spaces, we are working and learning every day how to continue to truly be accessible to the community. Thank you, Winter, for lighting up our Indoor Park and bringing your energy and enthusiasm to Vivo! We can’t wait to see you again soon.
