Director at Large (Innovative public health thought leader)
Vivo is a charity on a mission to create healthier generations through two platforms: our Centre for Wellbeing and our Innovation Collaboratory. Together, we empower Canadians to connect, care for and advocate more for their health, community and the planet.
We currently have an attractive opportunity for an experienced Director at Large with who can help us stay ahead of trends in health policy and research. You’ll be joining a sophisticated organization at an exciting stage of its evolution.
We are currently raising the final 1% of funds for our $60 million expansion and renovation. Construction is well under way and we are on schedule and on budget to fully welcome our community back in early 2023. We have also invested more than $6 million in Research and Innovation to further our work of creating healthier generations.
As our new Director, you’ll join a strategic governance board focused on providing oversight, foresight, insight and relationships to the CEO and organization. You’ll be part of a leadership team that will help Vivo chart the course for the next chapter in its journey. You’ll also provide oversight for a seasoned senior leadership team that manages an expected 180 talented employees.
Our board meets six times a year and gathers annually for our Annual General Meeting and Board Planning Advance – because at Vivo, we don’t retreat, we advance! As part of our commitment to governance excellence, we are currently pursuing accreditation through Imagine Canada’s Standards Program.
What we’re seeking
We’re seeking an innovative health policy or research minded individual with tremendous foresight who can help us anticipate and leverage trends and evaluate where we can make the most impact. You likely built your knowledge and foresight working in public health policy research. You are excited by the prospect of applying your knowledge of trends to help Vivo map its next strategic plan.
Our ideal candidate is a strategic and experienced leader with governance board experience. You can think beyond the details to see the patterns and big picture, you ask insightful questions diplomatically, and you have outstanding people and relationship management skills.

- At least two years of experience serving on the strategic governance board/
- Governance training and a firm understanding of the role of a governance board.
- Outstanding grasp of trends in public health, and a track record of innovative thinking.
- Business acumen and an entrepreneurial mindset.
- Strategic mind and the ability to see the big picture.
- Demonstrated diplomacy and conflict resolution skills.
- Track record of successfully facilitating effective meetings and courageous conversations.
- Commitment to Vivo’s mission, vision, values, strategy and governance model.
- Familiarity with Imagine Canada’s Standards Program is welcome, but not required.
Our directors commit to a minimum three-year term and roughly 10 hours per month. This can increase slightly during onboarding and again with Vivo’s AGM and Board Advance.
